Side Streets: The new Bowery Boys podcast series, only on Patreon

We’ve just debuted a new podcast series — Side Streets, available only to those who support the Bowery Boys Podcast on Patreon, featuring conversation about all sorts of New York City related subjects.

And the first episode is all about food!

Greg and Tom — with some help from producer Kieran Gannon — reflect nostalgically upon old New York City restaurants from the 1990s (Mars 2112, anyone?), wonder what it was like to eat at a chop suey restaurant, praise the strange wonders of Chez Josephine and Congee Village and reveal their favorite diners in the city.

PLUS: Where do the Bowery Boys go to have a delicious slice of pizza? (Hint: Head to Brooklyn.)

In remembering NYC diners now closed I always think of the Market Diner that was on the far west side. As a tobacco salesman, whose route included Manhattan, my father ate there many times, sometimes with a grade school aged me in the passenger seat when I joined him on school holidays. It was a perfect lunch spot for him as he loved diners and it had a parking lot. I remember that there were often a lot of taxis parked there for lunch as well.

I really enjoyed this episode. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I think Jackson Heights would be a great neighborhood for a food tour with so many different cuisines, sights, sounds in such close proximity.

If I had to choose one dessert I thought instantly about two things: Baked Alaska at DelMonicos and Lemon Ice King Of Corona.

Lemon Ice King is definitely worth a visit any time of the year and there’s so much variety in flavors and it’s such an old school place. Speaking of old school The Park Side Restaurant a wonderful throwback to elegant white table cloth Italian dining is a block away from the Lemon Ice King. They have THE BEST bread basket in NYC also if interest one of their dining rooms is dedicated to Marilyn Monroe!
